How are YOU getting out on the Road?
With the COVID-19 pandemic in full bloom. Finding safe ways to entertain ourselves can be a challenge. Especially if you're hoping to spend some time outdoors on your e-bike. Social distancing is a necessity and with spring here, the temperatures are warming up; bike trails are a-calling. It may feel a bit intimidating thinking about getting outdoors for a ride right now, but rest assured, there are safe options out there.
Many communities across the U.S. have wonderful bike trails to explore. Make sure to do your research about the options in your area that may be closed right now. Think also about road biking. Local streets are a lot less traveled by cars now. Keep in mind that drivers may be going faster now that there is less traffic. Something to be aware of for safety.
Here are a few great sites to check out that will give you detailed information about bike trails in your area.
Map My Ride - This site is also an application. When you create a free account you can map your ride, share it on social media and search trails. There is also a premium account option that offers a more upgraded experience.
All Trails - Both a website and application it’s another sound option to locate trails in your area for biking, running and hiking. There are reviews about trails. It can also be used to track your ride and share on your favorite social media platforms.
TrailLink - Another option that shares trail information throughout the US. For more detailed info you must have a subscription.
Don’t forget these traditional safety tips for when you’re out there on your new found trail.
- Always wear a helmet. If fashion is a deterrent there are many cool options out there to choose from. A helmet may not be 100% guaranteed to save your life, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.
- Be seen - wear bright colors, reflective clothing (especially if you're out early, or after dark), and always have lights on your bike.
- Carry a cell phone and ID - you never know when you’ll need to call for help or if something happens to you, you want to be able to be identified.
- Wear sunscreen - especially on the back of your neck and ears and protect your eyes from the sun with sunglasses. Install rear view mirrors on your bike or helmet - being able to see what’s coming up behind you without swerving can save your life.
- Take along a bottle of ice water, hand sanitizer and a favorite audiobook or playlist and enjoy the beautiful outdoors. It’s a great way to decompress and at least briefly escape the boredom of social distancing.
